These traditions date back in history. One of the celebrated one was known as "une loterie d'amour". The English paraphrase would be "drawing for love". As per this tradition particular men entering the house that lies opposite to their own. They would call out till such time a young lady appeared and they got a partner to pair themselves up with. He was a prisoner, arrested in Tower of London. It was while his imprisonment that he used to send love letters, poems and cards to his beloved wife in France.
